Ever thought lighting a room is as simple as switching a light bulb? Read on for pointers and tips.

A big part of interior design is how a space is lit. And unfortunately as novices, that is the first place that is ignored when designing a new space or updating a current one.

Simply put, expertly placed lighting adds another dimension to a space, bringing an interior design project to life by enhancing the space, and creating a nuanced atmosphere. We can subtly increase or decrease depth and height of a room as well as draw the eye towards items of interest.

Lighting design however, isn’t just about deciding where to place lamps and overhead light fixtures. Some thought also needs to be given to establishing the mood of the space and how that can be enhanced by the color scale of the light. Warm yellow tones invite feelings of coziness whereas cool white tones offer a crisp, alert and invigorating space.

When designing a room, it is very important to plan keeping in mind not just artificial light but how much natural light is received as well. This will have an effect on the choice of window treatments needed as well as the type and strength of lighting fixtures to ensure optimal illumination.

What tasks are to be performed in a room will also determine the type of lighting that is chosen. For example, in kitchens, bathrooms and dining rooms, lots of bright light is needed to ensure proper visibility while doing tasks. Therefore, pendant lights that provide warm bright illumination will be a better fit for hanging over the kitchen islands or on top of the dining table. This will also create a welcoming aura which will invite people towards it.

Phosphorescent recessed lights in cool tones are ideally better for providing an invigorating and alert climate in offices. Places which need clinical precision like hospitals and factories also benefit from the same type of lighting.

When approaching the decision on how to illuminate a space, we need to keep in mind the different layers that make a multipurpose room luminous. The basic layer of lighting also known as ambient lighting is used to enhance the background illumination. A uniform layer of recessed ceiling lights, under cabinet led strip lighting or wall sconces can easily address this.

Accent lighting draws attention to particular features like paintings, artwork or an interesting item that needs to be highlighted further. Low lights and spotlights will work well in such situations.

Lastly, there is the option of including task lighting for providing illumination for a particular activity. Since living rooms are mostly multi purpose rooms, we can add overhead lamps or table lamps for reading and studying.

Lighting design forms an important part of interior design as it helps us to add another dimension to a particular space. The colours and textures in a room are further enhanced by tasteful lighting. Therefore, it can be easily said that a good lighting design can augment the efforts of interior designers when planning a location. On the other hand, if lighting is ignored ,it can just as easily make a space feel unwelcome and dingy.
